As a country with largely varied terrain and ecosystems, Costa Rica has become home to many unique animals and plants species. The Danaus Ecological Reserve in La Fortuna, Costa Rica has three main objectives which are conservation, education and research. They also open the doors to the public for tours and educational activities.

A circular trail runs throughout the property taking guests though each aspect of the Ecological Reserve, so that they don’t miss out on seeing anything. You can go on a formal tour with a knowledgable guide who will explain important details about the nature and creatures that live at the reserve. Or, you can choose to walk around by yourself. Either way, you will get to see many types of flowers, plants, medicinal plants, mammals, reptiles and insects among others.
During your walk through the reserve you will see the Butterfly Garden, which has over 30 different types of butterflies including the well sought-after Blue Morpho butterfly. There is also a tree nursery made of up 350 meters of land, reserved especially for the regeneration of trees. You will also get to see a variety of beautiful flowers including orchids and heliconias, as well as a garden full of medicinal plants for almost every ailment.
A favourite among visitors, especially children, is the Frog Observatory because these frogs come in all different colors especially the Red Poisonous Frog and the Red-Eyed Tree Frog.
The Ecocentro Danaus also hosts a large biodiversity of mammals (sloths, marsupials, agoutis, squirrels, coatis and  coyotes); Reptiles (caimans, lizards, snakes, basilisks); a variety of interesting insects and more than 150 different species of birds like the famous toucan.
This tour runs in the morning but can be taken in the evening too. As it gets dark in Costa Rica at 6pm, you will have a chance to see all of the nocturnal creatures that are only usually seen at night!
